There is also the quite good free personal firewall "Kerio" (http://www.kerio.com/kpf_home.html). A German version is also available under http://www.kerio.com/kpf_home.html . As far as I know, the personal firewall module itself is complete free for private usage and the additional modules that are also included, like popup-blockers, privacy-protection and so on, are limited to 30 days. Have a look!

The link for ZoneAlarm is broken (specific error message below). :-/ Looking further, it appears that Zone Labs has revamped their website. They don't seem to have a page describing the free version anymore, just a link on the home page. http://www.zonelabs.com/ http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/1012_zl/zlsSetup_55_062_004.exe -------------------------- Failure of server APACHE bridge: Neither cluster nor server host parameter was specified in httpd.conf. Cannot continue. Build date/time: Mar 4 2003 17:59:06 Change Number: 242003
there is a link on the homepage under the quick links: http://www.zonealarm.com or http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/trial_zaFamily/trial_zaFamily.jsp?lid=1home_freedownloads
ZA is indeed a powerful client-side firewall. *However*, you should NOT use it with old/slow computers, as it will incur a heavy performance penalty on them. Even on "current" systems, have noticed a 7-25% slowdown on all but the fastest P4/A64 systems. Kerio has a poor memory when it comes to program permisions, in my experience, and it barfs on programs that use DirectX screen overlay (mostly games).
I wouldn`t be without it! I regularly check the log on my ZA & saw that my pv was trying to connect to an address unknown to me, it told me that 311 times a night it was trying to access this site all bloked by ZA ha ha.I then serched my pc & found two suspiciously named maps in my online game map pack, these maps & alterations have to be downloaded from the game server on good faith! I deleted these maps & bingo all quiet on the ZoneAlarm front.I also like the way you can alter the permision programs have for internet access after you set it before but you now think that the program may have been compromised, you can set it so the program has to re-ask for permision to access or act as a server on the internet. I did a port scan with a free port scanner on the web, the site said 97% fail on one thing or another with ZA controls set high my pc was in the 3% with all tests showing green, (100% passes).I`m just your average user & it seems great to me, very easy to setup & use.
