WinMX does not deserve to be classed as 'clean' software. Although they claim not to contain any spyware, a basic internet search will pick up lots of concerns that winmx collects personal data and 'phones home' with it - winmx are very secretive about this and won't discuss it. Also, they, or agents acting for them, often spam download sites with links for their product - hardly the actions of a reputable company.
I have absolutely no idea where Davey gets his delusions from. WinMX is a clean, compact and versatile application. I’ve been using it for 2 years now and have never had any problems. Maybe Davey downloaded it from somewhere other than www.wimx.com and got something bundled with his version by an unscrupulous download site? Search on google for winmx and spyware as your search parameters and you’ll see that there are lots of pages – mainly for a dodgy spyware removal tool (adwareremovergold) that is trying to get more hits to their website by trying to associate themselves with the winmx name. In a word, WinMX is FANTASTIC.
katanax, if an application has programs bundled into it that collects personal data about you and checks in with their main website you won't have any problems with it. these things are done transparently to the user so although your system is running at full speed and you think that it is running perfectly fine and arn't seeing any popups or anything it can still be violating your privacy. please keep in mind that just because an application does not open popups or do something else noticable to the user, it can still have malicious code added to it that works in the background without you ever being aware of it.
Can someone please confirm whether or not it is spyware. Googling around I only found info on a winmx trojan, nothing about spyware apart from the links to adwareremovergold. Would be great for more info.
I've used WinMX for a long time without any problems, and I've never seen any spyware/adaware/virii/trojans after scanning with anti-virus and spyware scanners. The network has a good selection of files, and usually runs pretty stable.
I have used WinMx for two year and have a nice little collection of songs This year for Christmas my wife bought me a MP-3 player and I'm now listening to my music on the go. With my remote garage door opener , cell phone and my PDA in tow, I'm ready to go!!! d_may
I have used WinMX for many years. I am using the latest version, acquired from the official site (as linked at CleanSoftware.org). I run routine checks of my system with Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, and several virus scanners. I never see any ads, and I don't think there is any spyware. None of the scanners have found anything.
Used winmx for more than 3 years and have never had any problems with it. Run Giant and Ad-aware spyware tools and neither has ever registered any activity from this program. There is a opt out for the monitoring part of the program, this is used for statistics etc and is clearly explained when you install the program. This is not spyware.
1st, I do not think WinMX uses spyware - if you think its phoning-home, setup a firewall and check :) Note that it does load a HTML document from their site to check if you have the right version ;). Next; To say that WinMX support 'opennap' is a bit of an overstatement - it does, yes, Hovever it does not follow the protocol correctly in quite a few aspects - I will not go into too many right now, but the way WinMX is at the moment most clients cannot download from im correctly or communicate with the user :(. Also, WinMX wont multisource on Opennap, claiming a protocol limitation... rotflmfao ;) I was washed in with the slashdot crowd, and I would like to do a little bit of free advertising - get my program (once its complete) listed here - it is purely for opennap, there will be NO WinMX peer network - but if you use WinMX for opennap, you should switch (when I release it, it isnt quite finished, it will be opensource). You will be able to run it alongside WinMX if you dont want to abandon its peer network.
on the winmx forum user site there are experts who understand the whole of winmx code and have tested mx for spy and such and apart frome the phone home there is non
Any program that wants personal information after you download it is collecting it to send it somewhere!!!! This is obvious! Spyware, I have had it for years and I don't think so, phone home? yes it does, otherwise why would the program care if about your personal information after, after, after download?
Sux.

Go to slyck.com and download a patch that makes winmx work again. Click on the winmx link on the left hand side of the page. This takes you to a page where you'll find two separate patches to choose from. I used the piepatch because it was automatic and I was feeling kinda lazy that day. You can choose a manual fix where you have to place a file into your system files. There is some discussion about which network these patches make winmx connect to but, who cares as long as you can still use winmx. Users love it so much that someone figured a way to keep it alive. The only problem I have found is that the messaging part does not work anymore. You can still browse and use the hotlist, you just can't send and receive messages. Again, who cares?
I was missing WinMX the other day when i stumbled upon something incredible at http://www.vladd44.com/mx/ . There is a group out there calling themselves MXPIE at http://www.MXPie.com/ . They have put together an easy to use update that will once again allow you to connect to the WinMX network. Their update contains no spyware, adware or any other form of malware. Check out the MXPIE Website at http://www.MXPie.com/ for everything you need. Along with their help, and getting my other computer problem sorted out at http://www.gemini777.net/ , I was able to enjoy WinMX at http://www.vladd44.com/mx/ better than I ever was before. Not only did they get me connected, they helped me fix my other problems as well. Realtime help available for WinMX 3.53 users having trouble getting connected. Go to WinMX Help Channels at http://www.vladd44.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=6514 .
One way to settle this once and for all, use an open source client, such a emule for windows, or better yet, amule for linux!
